9 new Science Minute Movies profile regional park workers

Each movie is approximately five minutes long and offers behind-the-scenes looks at science in action.

The entire series may be viewed at nwparkscience.org/video .

“Working Between The Tides” looks at scientific monitoring in the intertidal zones at Olympic National Park.

These intertidal zones, those turbulent areas between land and sea, can be difficult work environments. In order to work during the lowest summer tides, researchers often wake at 2 a.m. and hike through the dark to sites along the park’s Pacific coastline.

The Science Minute Movies were developed to inform the public about studies involved in protecting parks for future generations, said a news release.

All eight parks in the North Coast/Cascades network are represented in the series, which also features scientists engaged in glacier monitoring, archeology and prairie restoration. In addition to Olympic, sites in the network include Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve, Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park, Lewis and Clark National Historic Park, Mount Rainier National Park, North Cascades National Park and San Juan Island National Historic Park.

 • Work on Olympic Hot Springs Road, which leads to the Elwha Valley, re-opened to public access Wednesday.

The road had been closed at the park boundary since May 31 so contractors could complete road repairs in the vicinity of “Fisherman’s Corner,” about one mile south of the park boundary. Repairs included the placement of bank protection, as well as replacement of failed road base material and asphalt along a 2,000-foot section of the road.

Engineers from the Federal Highways Administration continue design and planning for repair work along Whiskey Bend Road. The 4.5-mile dirt road which leads to the Elwha Valley trailhead has been closed to motorized access since December 2010 due to slide damage sustained during heavy rains.

Whiskey Bend Road remains open to pedestrians, bicyclists and stock users.

For more information about visiting Olympic National Park, including road and trail conditions, check the park’s website at www.nps.gov/olym .

Wet, cold weather can occur anytime of the year.
