Turtle alert! Flights delayed at JFK as terrapins cross runway

Late arrivals, technical faults and even a lack of crew are all regularly offered as a reason for airport delays.

But migrating turtles taking over the runway is certainly a new excuse.

Amused travellers at New York's JFK Airport were yesterday told a runway had been closed for 15 minutes after turtles were spotted crossing the tarmac on their way to lay eggs.

About 150 diamondback terrapin turtles - mainly female - tramped across Runway 4 to the 185-acre Jamaica Bay wildlife reserve next door where their eggs will be fertilised by their male partners.

The first turtle was spotted at 6.45am when air traffic control contacted an American Airlines flight bound for the Dominican Republic with the question: 'There's a report of a turtle on the runway. Do you want to have it removed first?'

Shortly after both Port Authority staff and the US Department of Agriculture were dispatched to help the creatures on their way.

The workers hurried to move the turtles between take-offs and landings, causing delays to numerous flights.

Holidaymakers and airlines took to Twitter to comment on the unusual cause of their travel woes and post witty comments and a Twitter account was even created for the turtles themselves.

By the end of the day, 3,000 people were following the @jfkturtles Twitter profile, where humorous updates were posted on the situation.

One tweet explained why the reptiles avoided airport security: 'We go straight to the runway because it takes 5 hours to get out of our shells for the TSA ...and the shell pat down option is too awkward.'

Despite the delays, everybody seemed to be in good spirits, with airline Jet Blue posting: 'Oh @JFKTurtles, we could never stay mad at you ... Glad you made it to your honeymoon spot safe.'

Port Authority spokesman Ron Marsico said: 'This happens every year. I guess some years there is more turtle activity.'

In July 2009, another runway was shut down when about 80 turtles crawled from the bay to the tarmac.

If an employer has denied you work or fired you because she or he will not accept your work authorization as proof of your legal right to work in the U.S., or they only hire U.S. citizens or permanent residents, she or he is breaking the law. You need to show the employer the List of Legal Work Papers on the left. If the employer still insists on seeing a particular document, or refuses to hire you, call OSC right away. ...various internet job boards list numerous job postings requiring that applicants be U.S. citizens or permanent residents (or “green card” holders) only. In addition, many job postings, especially for positions in the high tech industry, express a preference for H-1B visa holders only. In most cases, it is unlawful discrimination to require job applicants to have a particular citizenship status or immigration status. An employer may require U.S. citizenship or permanent residence for a particular job only when required by law, regulation, or government contract. I am also from India but the point I am discussing here is clearly a violation of law by Outsourcing vendors including IBM (not just Indian companies), TCS, Wipro etc. I work for a medium size consulting firm based in US and on H1 visa ...and I am impacted by these violations and I think I have the right to oppose this act.... to prove my identity shud I tell you my stories in Chennai consulate... or shud I tell u abt my days in b'lore or shud I tell you all abt my 24 years in India.. you can decide :-). Don't loose your heart. I know this is a serious situation but do not become emontional, just stay calm. This is clearly a confusing situation and a bad move by your employer. Have you got a good attorney? Just consult a good attorney and go with what s/he says. This is not your fault and before thinking of going back, fight for yourself and your family. Remember, tough time never lasts, tough people do. Our best wishes and prayers are with you. 3). My H1B was recently extended by 3 years (I complete 6 years in a few days) based on my 'engineering' approved I-140. They also filed an adjustment of my job duties to reflect my marketing role. I will visit Calgary, Canada next week (June) to renew my H1B stamp. Any chance that I might have problems during my interview since my 'engineering' I-140 is really not any more use since I moved to marketing?
