HAMILTON — Thirty years ago, four Bitterroot scientists had a dream.

They believed that hidden away in the cell wall of a certain bacteria, there were all the components necessary to produce a material with the power to stimulate the immune system and possibly save millions of lives.

Starting in a tiny garage converted into a laboratory, the four began groundbreaking work that would eventually lead to the discovery of the adjuvant Monophosphoryl Lipid A, or MPL.

Adjuvants enhance a vaccine’s ability to elicit a strong response from the immune system.

MPL does that job extremely well.

When mixed in quantities smaller than the head of a pin with a vaccine’s antigen — the portion of a vaccine that elicits the immune response — MPL works wonders in doses needed to ward off devastating illnesses like cervical cancer and hepatitis B.

Three decades later, on the same site where Edgar Ribi, John Cantrell, Steven Schwartzman and Reno Parker first expanded their fledgling Ribi ImmunoChem Research company, GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals’ scientists continue to search for new uses for MPL and similar adjuvants.

Someday, those substances could hold the key to controlling Alzheimer’s or stage 3 melanoma.

GSK scientists are even exploring the potential of using adjuvants to help people kick the smoking habitat.

“There is a lot of novel work that is happening here right now,” said Michael Covarrubias, GSK’s site director in Hamilton. “There is no way to know for sure what the future might hold.”

Most of the work inside the sprawling 193,000-square-foot complex focuses on the production of MPL for cervical cancer and, to a lesser extent, hepatitis B vaccines.

Today, GSK’s Hamilton plant employs about 200 people and has an annual operating budget of close to $40 million.

With a growing worldwide demand for the company’s cervical cancer vaccine, Cervarix, GSK officials announced recently they would add about 30 new full-time positions at the Hamilton plant over the next few weeks.

“Once people find a spot here, they really do their best to try to keep it,” he said. “It’s a quality-of-life issue for many who work here. I tell people I live in a postcard.”

There are five or six employees who have been at the plant since Day One. Several have more than 20 years on the job.

A dozen have half that. More than half of the employees at the Hamilton facility hold advanced degrees.
