If your credit card details are stolen, you don't want the thief to be able to spend all the money you'll ever make. So use a pre-paid card with a strict limit, and add money from your current account when you need to buy more expensive items. If that is the only card you use online, then you are only at risk for the money on that card at any given time.

Don't give out credit card details anywhere you don't trust

Most important: do not, do not give out your credit card willy-nilly. Look for VeriSign marks; sites carrying it can be trusted (although it is not so widespread as to say that no sites without it can). It goes without saying that any site that offers prizes or winnings or the fortune of a Nigerian prince and requires your credit card details to access them probably can't be trusted.
