Westside Stories: A great big thanks to Bill
My dear friend Bill Butler is one of those incredibly-hard-to-surprise people, so with a plan in place for weeks before an event in Rosenberg to honor him, I was shocked that he never got wind of it.
I know he didn't because if he had, he would never have shown up.
Just before 10 a.m. Saturday, June 18, several of us gathered at Another Time Soda Fountain, which Bill's wife, Renee , owns. It's located on Third Street, across from where opening ceremonies for Czech Heritage Day, the first of the Summer Fun in Historic Downtown Rosenberg events, was about to begin.
Sponsored by Downtown Merchants of Rosenberg and the city, the free, family-friendly celebrations take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. the third Saturday of every month, and the plan was to kick off the festivities by honoring Bill for all he has done for the downtown area.
Although Bill and Renee shy away from the limelight and don't like credit for all they do, they have pretty much single-handedly revived downtown Rosenberg over the past several years.
Renee was in on the secret to honor Bill, who joked about being none to happy about that once he was called on stage by Downtown Merchants president Rae Taylor .
Rae talked about how the downtown area had "made great strides in the past few years."
"The main person who has made all that happen for us is pretty unsuspecting this morning," she said as she looked at Bill, whose head immediately dropped with embarrassment.
After being coaxed on stage, he was presented with two plaques, one for him to keep and the other to be mounted at 828 Third St.
Bill being Bill, he turned the honor right back at the crowd and said, "It's the people of Rosenberg who make it special. It's the people, not the bricks."
Leave it to Bill. Like I said, he's about as humble as they come.
A what farm?Several years ago, I met a man who had one of the most unusual jobs I'd ever heard of.
Well, actually, the job itself wasn't so weird – he was a crime scene analyst of sorts (I can't remember his exact title) – but when he began telling me some of the work involved in his exact field of expertise, I'd never heard of such things.
Among them was a body farm they had at the university in Tennessee where he taught.
What's a body farm, you ask? Well, it's a research facility where human decomposition is studied.
They take bodies that have been donated for that specific purpose and place them in a variety of outdoor settings and leave them to decompose.
