Driving cross-country on a soul-searching journey, Ryan Fisher had his epiphany just outside Milwaukee: He would open a bar where you play ping pong.

Fisher, then 32, had grown up in the hospitality business. His father started a Keg-like chain in South Africa called Longhorn Steakhouse, then moved his family to Canada to start up the Firkin Group of pubs (yes, I always hear those words in my head spoken by John Cleese in the radio ads). Fisher learned the trade from the dishpit up. But after the chain hit 30 doors he longed to branch out on his own.

“I thought, here is a way to encourage people not to take themselves so seriously, chasing a stupid little ball around the table. Ping pong is the way to bring together a Bay Street guy and a Queen Street artist and level the playing field and get them laughing together.”

Ping pong is having a moment. Besides the delete-bin 2007 Christopher Walken movie Balls of Fury , it hasn’t occupied a romantic niche in popular culture. But the unlikely combination of a movie star and a ping-pong champ (Susan Sarandon and Jonathan Bricklin, often rumoured but always denied to be romantically linked), and partners Franck Raharinosy and Andrew Gordon, put table tennis on the map in New York City.

SPiN Galactic opened two years ago at 23rd and Madison and was immediately embraced by hipsters of all stripes, cited as a summer favourite regularly in The New York Times Sunday Styles section as “a cool place that’s not trying too hard to be cool and exudes a certain authenticity,” and “inclusive if you’re anyone from a celebrity to an Olympic Ping-Pong player to a financial guy to a hipster.” Branches in Milwaulkee and St. Pete’s followed.

And at the beginning of August, Fisher’s Toronto location will open in 12,000 square feet at King and Spadina in a basement space under Brassai. The design, as at all locations, is by former fashion designer Todd Oldham, a Sarandon chum.

“Hey, everyone has a ping-pong memory,” says Fisher. And it is usually a wholesome one, from a vacation, summer camp.”

In fact opening his own place may be the only way to get his buddies out of his super-deluxe bachelor-pad loft in Liberty Village where a ping-pong table sits where a dining-room table would normally be.

“We call it the Vortex. The guys will come by before we are supposed to head out and we will end up here all night.”

Fisher points out how much healthier an alternative ping pong is to old-school bar games. “Pool was all about smoky rooms. But table tennis is an Olympic sport. You work up a real sweat going at this.
