SPJST Bridal Show Wednesday
According to Ima Jean Weise, activity director for S.P.J.S.T., the purpose of the Bridal Show is to give residents a chance to look back on their wedding day and feel good about themselves.
“We want to make them feel special and help build their self esteem,” she said, adding that so far, 10 brides and 30 others are taking part in the event, with the others dressing up as the mother of the bride, grandmother of the bride and groom.
Weise said some of the residents have never even worn a wedding dress or formal attire before, so this is their opportunity to do just that.
“We have picked up dresses here and there to let them wear,” she said. “Some people have actually donated their own dresses. It is neat for the residents to see how much the dresses have changed over the years.”
The Bridal Show is also a chance for residents to relive cherished memories.
“In the past, we have had some of our residents exchange their vows with their family up there with them,” she said. “Some share their wedding pictures and memories as well.”
Weise said residents will be able to get pictures taken with family and friends to include in their scrapbooks, and there will be a reception after the show with music and cake.
“It’s really good to see everyone dressed up,” she said. “We will do the ladies’ hair and jewelry and all of the men are usually dressed up in suits.”
Before the show, Weise said there will be a mock bachelorette party at 10:30 a.m., which will be put on by the ladies of the Red Hat Society.
“We will choose one of the brides to be the honoree and will do everything we can to make them feel special,” she said.
Then, at 12:30 p.m., there will be a barbecue lunch for the residents prior to the big event.
Weise said there is a lot of preparation involved in making it a special day, but it is all worth it.
“We start by creating index cards with the residents’ names and sizes on them, get the cakes and decorations ready, and spend time preparing for the best day they’ve ever had,” she said.
