Chrysler Is Doing Better, but Now It Needs an Identity

In 2009, the debate was whether the company should be allowed to survive. Now the question is, Will consumers respond to the revived company? So far, the alliance with Fiat has worked out exceptionally well. But CEO Sergio Marchionne has his work cut out for him when it comes to inspiring a new identity for the Motown legend.
Where the rubber hits the road
Marchionne has made two brilliant moves. First, he’s financed Chrysler’s recovery largely with other people’s money, pleading poverty at every step while keeping his master plan cryptic. This has enabled Chrysler to make good on its debts to the U.S. government while returning to very modest profitability.
Second, he’s focused on the Jeep brand — a predictable move for a European, who might not innately grasp the virtues of Dodge minivans and neo-muscle cars. The review of revamped Jeeps have been positive, however, so mission accomplished on that front.
But now the real work begins. As a condition of taking a larger stake in Chrysler, Fiat has to help the company introduce a small, fuel-efficient car that gets 40 mpg . Bloomberg neatly summarizes what’s at stake:
Fiat is consolidating control over Chrysler. Fiat is buying the U.S. Treasury Department’s final stake in the U.S. automaker, acquired as part of Chrysler’s 2009 bankruptcy reorganization. That purchase will raise Fiat’s stake to 52 percent on a fully diluted basis. Chrysler must test and commit to building a vehicle in the U.S. that achieves 40 mpg to gain another 5 percent stake.
