Saturday morning at the farmers market….Love Love Love. Lately I’ve been hitting the big Union Square Market at around 8am Saturdays (yes you can tell I’m not much of a party girl these days!), but I was a little lazy which in turn made me a little pressed for time so I just went to the far smaller one down here near me in Tribeca. (2 blocks from my house…how lucky am I!!??)

There was more than enough to keep me excited and to empty my wallet. Super yummy looking strawberries,russian river kale, 2 huge bunches of tuscan kale, various lettuces, cucumbers, spinach, basil, a couple of greatlooking apples,(winesap?fuji?oops I forgot), and then I got sucked into buying this humongous bunch of lambsquarters, which is a really really odd name, but which I was assured is not only teeming with nutrients, but has a taste profile somewhat like that of spinach. Spinach is in my opinion the easiest go-to gateway green in a green smoothie so I felt pretty confident that this wouldnt be one of my green smoothie missteps.(As in my illfated watercress/strawberry catastrophe–the one time I actually had to get rid of a smoothie. Just impossible for me to get down!)

How is it that walking through farmers markets and buying these greens gets me as oddly giddy and excited as Carrie Bradshaw would get about Manolo Blahniks. Or Mr. Big. (They were playing SATC episodes at the gym yesterday so it’s fresh on my mind)

Seriously though I get so weirdly exuberant and passionate when I see the fresh dirt on the leaves and savor the scent of fresh cilantro, that I often have little fantasies about how happy I would be living in the middle of nowhere and tending to an organic farm. For some odd reason that I can’t fathom this organic farm of mine must be some where in the alps,and  a long long time ago to boot, because Julie Andrews is generally featured swirling and singing in these fantasies.

Umm–OK, I digress.

So back home–what smoothie to make today? I feel I should try something new, and use my lambsquarters, which I in the interim have looked up and discovered that while a relative of spinach, is even more nutritious and is extremely rich in betacarotene, vitamin B2, niacin, calcium, iron and phosphorus. (That was just a 2 second search btw–I will post more as I learn)

Sooo…let’s see. I decide to use one of my apples (I really think they’re winesap!!), some water (maybe 1/2 cup), a nice big big handful of lambsquarters (I’ll try to measure in cups one of these days–but for now “large handful” is as scientific as I get!), throw in a cucumber for some of that super-powered cucumber goodness, and a little mint. Then to jazz it up, a few leaves of basil and 4 strawberries.
