A volunteer at the church where I work forwarded your column to me since he knew of the difficulties I’ve been having the past 2 weeks. It all started on June 5th when I drove to the church on my brand new red Honda Elite scooter which I purchased on April 25, 2011. With a little over 700 miles during the next seven weeks, I have had no problems. Then that fateful night, it would not start. I emailed the company that same night just to give them the notice that it would not start. The next day, Monday June 6th, I made a YouTube video showing it not starting. A viewer commented on possible solutions. One being a new spark plug. So, Tuesday evening around the time I get off work, I took the original spark plug out and walked across the street to Advanced Auto parts where the salesman looked up on the computer for a similar spark plug. I bought it and installed in the scooter. Nothing. I then had the scooter towed to the dealer in Kissimmee on Thursday morning. On Friday, I receive a call from the dealer telling me that the spark plug I put into the motor was not the correct size and thus damaged the piston thereby voiding the warranty! I knew this was wrong because when I installed the spark plug, the motor did not start. (i.e. no spark) I even left the new spark plug under the seat thinking I could always use it later down the road.
I contacted Honda USA whom I purchased an additional Honda Care plan warranty and was given a case manager. After repeated calls and faxes to all parties involved, they still insist that I did something which voided the warranty. I merely drove my scooter to work that Sunday night and tried to restart it – all of which is caught on our church security surveillance (Thankfully!). Today is Thursday June 23rd and I just received a call from the Service Manager. Once again, he wants me to accept responsibility for metal shavings on the engine piston. I have no reason to damage my scooter. I am paying for the scooter (broken or not) – per the contract I signed. The product failed and I want it fixed so I can continue driving that which I bought. I went so far as to send a signed, notarized copy to them stating the facts that I did nothing to damage my scooter.
