Talk is cheap, this is a miracle

His health disguised the poison within, the cluster of tumours that would, within weeks or months, spread from his liver and condemn him, as he put it, to the nothingness after death.

The only fix was someone's else's liver. Hinch had hoped, for the sake of the donor's family, that his operation, if it happened, could be kept confidential, even for a few days.

This was crazy talk. There was an inevitable clamour for details when Melbourne awoke yesterday morning. Hinch was making headlines, even as he lay unconscious, doctors up to "our armpits" inside him.

Liver transplants are common enough procedures, even if the life they bring is counterweighed by the loss of life that brings them about.

Hinch was lucky. Up to 20 per cent of patients approved for a liver transplant die waiting.

His recovery, too, should be kinder than those patients who, because of progressive liver failure, undergo major surgery after other critical body system breakdowns have conspired to kill them.

Hinch was dying, certainly, but he wasn't yet fading in degrees. Until five years ago, he drank - a lot. Drinking can cause cirrhosis, which can cause cancer. Yet liver cancer often displays no symptoms at first.

Hinch had felt better than at any other time he could recall. The short bloke in the Cuban-heeled boots, bellowing about injustices from court-room steps and at public rallies, didn't look like he was going anywhere. And didn't longevity run in the family?

If he felt disquiet about waiting for something that may never come, he hid it well. Only a blog entry hinted of the twitchiness common to those in Hinch's predicament.

There had been a hospital call-up more than seven weeks ago when Hinch thought he was about to go under - only to be told to go home.

He was spared the trauma of another patient who, recently, was anaesthetised, to wake up from an operation that hadn't happened.

Hinch had waited longer than the prescribed six months on the list.

He is about to face a contempt of court sentence that could put him in jail, again, or home detention. His doctor had told a court his patient might have three months before his cancer spread. This was more than a month ago.

Hinch was said to be in good spirits when he arrived at the Austin Hospital late on Tuesday night. The magnitude of the moment did not distract him from brokering media negotiations.

It is supposed that unconsciousness subsequently stopped Hinch talking. This may have been a career first.

This is a picture (color and B&W) of a sweet little baby whose birth I was able to assist with. It was an amazing experience that I'll never forget. His mommy was amazing and his daddy, Aunt and Grandma were wonderful and so much help and support to his mommy. He has been blessed with wonderful parents and the Lord really blessed us with a strong and healthy baby boy.
