Voyageurs Lutheran Ministry receives $45500 grant for the E3: Educate, Equip ...

Voyageurs Lutheran Ministry (VLM) of Cook recently received a $45,500 grant from the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation. The grant will be used for the E3 Project that seeks to establish a cycle of sustainable giving to support the ministry at Camp Hiawatha and Camp Vermilion.

"The sustainability of our mission is not at question, but the level at which we can live it is. More lives will be changed at camp because of what people choose do right here, right now. The Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation's grant support will allow us to establish a sustainable network of giving and position Camp Hiawatha and Camp Vermilion to better meet the faith and leadership development needs of our campers and their families," said Joel Abenth, executive director of Voyageurs Lutheran Ministry.

Lutheran organizations receive nearly $37 million through Thrivent ...

Program. Nearly 18,000 Lutheran congregations and organizations have benefited from this funding.

Through Choice Dollars eligible Thrivent Financial members recommend where to distribute a portion of Thrivent Financial’s charitable funds among their favorite Lutheran congregations and organizations.

Choice Dollars funds distributed in program year 2010 and the first four months of 2011 included $25.3 million to congregations (69 percent of total); $3.2 million to Lutheran elementary schools (9 percent); $2.1 million to other Lutheran organizations (6 percent); $1.5 million to social ministry organizations (4 percent); and $1.4 million to camps/outdoor ministries (4 percent). Other Lutheran organizations receiving funding included colleges/universities ($1.1 million), preschools ($797,860), high schools ($743,872), seminaries ($549,061), and campus ministries ($189,736).

“One benefit of membership in Thrivent Financial is the chance to weigh in on how Thrivent Financial’s charitable dollars are distributed to various Lutheran organizations,” said Allison Ratwik, director of Thrivent Choice. “It’s clear that they appreciate that opportunity, given that the program is less than one year old and more than 35 percent of our eligible members have participated.” Ratwik notes that since the program is still very new, Thrivent Financial is carefully reviewing results to determine how it can best serve members going forward.

In addition to Choice Dollars funding, Thrivent Financial held two Thrivent Choice Voting Events in which the organization’s benefit members ages 16 and older voted to determine how select nonprofit organizations would share $1 million of Thrivent Financial’s charitable funds. More than 280,000 votes were cast during these voting events.

In 2010, Thrivent Financial and its members contributed, raised and donated more than $135 million to help congregations, communities and nonprofit organizations. Thrivent Choice is one of many ways that Thrivent Financial gives back.
