British actor John Wood dies at 81
British actor John Wood - who won a Tony Award in 1976 and appeared in numerous films and TV series - has died at the age of 81.
Wood, who was made a CBE in 2007 for services to drama, won the Tony Award for his role in a Broadway production of Tom Stoppard's Travesties.
The star-born Derbyshire died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, said his agent.
He has appeared in films such as The Madness of King George and Shadowlands.
A statement from his agent said: "John was a distinguished classical actor, who was much loved and respected by his colleagues and will be sorely missed."
Wood most recently appeared in the television series Lewis in 2007.
His television credits include other Goodnight Mr Chips, Foyle War, Love in a cold climate and Kavanagh QC.
He completed an internship at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and before that at the Old Vic in London, where he appeared alongside Richard Burton.
The interpreter has received two Tony nominations during his career, one for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead in 1968 and one for Sherlock Holmes.
Wood was nominated for an Olivier Award in 1997 for the role of AE Housman in Stoppard's The Invention of Love.
He is survived by his wife and four children.

I loved the story and thought it was both compelling and inspiring. It is centered around a bitter man who discovers a new life as he takes in a young war refugee who evacuated to the village during the Blitz of London. The transformation of this gorgeous older man as he loves the boy is so comforting. And the metamorphosis of a young boy abused child to a healthy boy young is simply spectacular. If you like positive film that speaks to your heart and moves then I suggest you give this masterpiece a try 90 minutes.
