Chaffetz endorses Romney as best chance to beat Obama

Congressman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, is throwing his support behind presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Chaffetz said on Tuesday he will endorse the former Massachusetts governor in his quest to earn the Republican nomination and beat current president Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential election.

"Mitt Romney is the right guy," Chaffetz said. "I want to beat Barack Obama and I think Mitt Romney is in the best position to do that."

Chaffetz's endorsement of Romney could be seen as a blow to former Utah governor Jon Huntsman's presidential campaign. Chaffetz ran Huntsman's gubernatorial campaign and served as his chief of staff for a period of time. He eventually left the governor's office and later ran for Congress. Chaffetz noted that his endorsement of Romney is not a statement on his feelings toward Huntsman.

"It's nothing personal, I just think Mitt is in the best position to win," he said.

Chaffetz noted that Romney has what he called the right type of background to make a good presidential candidate. He said Romney's experience in running large organizations puts him in a good position to run the country and that Romney also has the excellent ability to raise money. Chaffetz said Romney is also gaining support nationally.

"It is exciting to see so much enthusiasm for his candidacy outside of Utah," Chaffetz said. "I've had friends in other states and places like Florida who are really enthused about his race."

Chaffetz's endorsement most likely won't sway many voters in Utah, but his endorsement shows that he views Romney as the leading candidate to earn the Republican presidential nomination and that he wants to be onboard with the potential next president of the United States.

"I think this is Jason picking which side will be more beneficial for him," said Richard Davis, a political science professor at Brigham Young University. "You would think he would have endorsed Huntsman, but at the same time, Romney is more popular."

Davis said that Chaffetz could benefit from having Romney on his side if he decides to run for a Senate seat in next year's elections. Davis also noted that the Huntsman campaign probably won't lose much sleep over Chaffetz's endorsement of Romney.

"I'd be surprised if they really expected that he is going to get the majority of support in Utah," Davis said of Huntsman.

Chaffetz has done work with the Romney camp in the past. In May he participated in a Romney fundraiser in Las Vegas. Romney endorsed Chaffetz in his first bid for his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008. Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Gov. Gary Herbert have already given their support to Romney. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, has yet to give an endorsement to a Republican presidential candidate.
