LOCAL fisherman Jason Hall is used to sharing the open water with Hervey Bay's iconic humpbacks but yesterday he had a whale encounter of the dangerous kind.

The owner of Ally Jay's Fishing Charters was taking a group on an offshore adventure when his boat collided with a confused whale off the bar.

Mr Hall said the freak accident could not have been avoided as he was unaware the whale was nearby.

“We were just coming out of a wave on the other side of the bar when a juvenile came to surface right in front of us,” he said.

“He steamed off so I don't think he was too bothered.

“I think we came out of it a lot worse than he did.”

The collision resulted in a large crack to the boat's bow.

Mr Hall said he had run charters throughout the last whale season but had never come in such close contact.

“You always have near misses,” he said.
