Peterman headed to Pitt-Johnstown for cross country
Sasha Peterman was a standout on the Altoona Area High School cross country team, qualifying for the PIAA, Class AAA state tournament in each of her four years.
She hopes to continue her long-distance running success at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, where she will be a member of that school's women's cross country team and enroll in the school's pre-pharmacy major.
"I like that it's a smaller campus, and they have some nice running trails over there,'' Peterman said of UPJ. "I think their program will be a good fit for me.''
Academically, Peterman - a National Honor Society student - had her sights set on the University of Pittsburgh because of its pre-pharmacy program. She is aspiring for a career as a pharmacist.
"I looked at Pitt main [campus], and I looked at UPJ,'' she said. "I really wanted to go to a University of Pittsburgh school because they have such a good pharmacy program.''
Peterman had four top 10 finishes in as many years in the District 6-AAA girls cross country meet. She placed seventh in both her freshman and sophomore years, sixth in her junior year, and 10th in her senior year. She was also a four-year distance runner on Altoona High School's girls track team, competing in the 1600 and 3200 runs, as well as the 3200 relay.
"She was a very consistent runner, and she has a very determined work ethic,'' Altoona High School girls cross country coach Tabitha Quinn said of Peterman. "She's a very self-motivated girl who would train in the offseason beyond what was asked of her, and she had a very positive influence on the other girls on the team.
