Benefit set for girl in mower accident

Campus Kidz Child Development Center will host a fundraiser Monday at the Buffalo Wild Wings in Genoa Township in which 20 percent of the day's total sales at the restaurant will go toward paying 3-year-old Lauren Stamper's medical bills, according to Kim Garra, center director.

Lauren Stamper last week had to have part of her left leg amputated after her grandfather accidentally ran over her with a John Deere riding lawn mower last week. She is recuperating at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor. Mott public relations officials Tuesday said she's in good condition.

Garra said Campus Kidz Child Development Center, 4533 E. Grand River Ave. in Genoa Township, will host the fundraiser from 11 a.m. to midnight Monday at Buffalo Wild Wings, 900 S. Latson Road.

Diners at Buffalo Wild Wings can contribute whether they dine in, place a carry-out order or order online via www.dineinlivingston.com .

Certificates notifying Livingston County residents of the fundraiser are available throughout the county. The bottom portion of the flier, which asks for the diner's name and e-mail address, must be presented Monday in order for the funds to be donated to the little girl.

"Lauren is in our preschool program, and when we heard what happened, we were all obviously devastated," said Garra. She said Stamper's grandparents often attend center field trips.

"We're a pretty tight-knit group, so everybody's been asking what they can do to help," she said.

Brighton Area Fire Department Lt. Curt Ruf said doctors did everything in their power to save the youngster's leg, but there was too much damage done.

Ruf said the child's grandfather, 63-year-old Harold Stamper, was mowing the lawn at his home on Chippewa Drive in Genoa Township at about 2:35 p.m. June 29 when he began backing up to make another pass.

"She went out to surprise him and he didn't see her," Ruf said. "She got hit by the back tire and fell. The blade of the lawn mower went on top of her.

"It was definitely an accident."

Ruf said Harold Stamper "threw" the lawn mower off the girl, whose left leg was nearly severed.

Livingston County EMS transported the girl to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, where she was in critical condition. She was then moved to Mott for surgery.

Harold Stamper was also transported to the hospital Wednesday for a panic attack as a result of the incident, according to Ruf.
