Shaun Atwood was a millionaire day trader in Phoenix but moved into the fast lane when he began selling drugs at rave parties. In 2002, his wake up call came early one morning when a SWAT team kicked in his door and arrested him for drug distribution. He soon found himself in the slammer, namely the notorious Maricopa Jail run by the even more notorious, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the self-proclaimed “Angel of Death.” Atwood’s account of the twenty-six months he spent at the violent, cockroach infested facility is nothing less than an expose that reveals the brutal, dark, tragic reality of day-to-day life in what has become known internationally as America’s toughest jail. According to Atwood, survival was in itself a crap shoot. Rival gangs vied for control, crystal meth was readily available, moldy bread was served routinely, and breaking even the simplest of rules could result in beatings or death. This is not an easy book to read. If just half of what Atwood writes is accurate, The Maricopa jail is a disgrace. Atwood claims conditions are more than just atrocious and meant to deny even the most basic of services such as medical attention and water that is safe for drinking. Atwood once asked a guard how “Sheriff Joe” could get away with such illegal jail conditions and was told that it was the sad fact that the world has no idea of what really goes on inside the Maricopa Jail. This book will provide a glimpse inside the facility and — take my word for it — it isn’t a pretty picture. What a Wonderful World: The Magic of Louis Armstrong’s Later Years by Ricky Riccardi (Pantheon, $28.95) Much has been written about Louis Armstong, one of America’s most beloved musical icons. How he learned to play the cornet in an orphan’s home in New Orleans, later moved to Chicago where he joined King Oliver’s band, and eventually redefined American jazz have all been fully documented. This biography is a little different in that Ricci Riccardi, a noted jazz scholar and musician, focuses on Armstrong’s final twenty-five years of life. During his final years, some critics thought Louis had sold out and dismissed him as a buffoonish entertainer. According to Riccardi, they missed the point. Even though Armstrong was being discovered by a new generation of music lovers throughout the 1950s and 60s, he never lost his edge or his creativity. The inventiveness and depth of expression reflected by his music during his final years reveals that he wasn’t afraid to take chances. For example, he recorded with strings and went against the flow as he cut such pop hits as “Hello, Dolly!” and “Mack the Knife.” This biography is an absolute pleasure to read. It is a book that enlarges and completes our understanding of one of the greatest jazz musicians ever. Riccardi writes with both insight and sensitivity as he proves that Armstrong was certainly multi-faceted and much more complex than many might have suspected. Simply put, Armstrong was nothing less than an American original and that is why the man and his music are so relevant, even 40 years after his death.
