Volunteers Help Turn Around Troubled School

But this year, test scores are up, which means the school could be removed from the state's "watch list."

Administrators give some of the credit to a popular summer bridge program that offers lessons on everything from Shakespeare to self-defense to help students brush up on the basics over the summer.

For six years, Anne Jenkins, her daughter and a small group of Annapolis volunteers have set up a Summer Enrichment Academy on the Bates campus. It is offered to students who want to maintain what they've learned during the year or to get ahead.

"In 1978, I discovered my students could not read, and I wrote a play so that the play would help them to read better," Jenkins said.

"Partnerships like Jenkins' that come and help kids and keep kids learning certainly does help our scores," said Diane Bragdon, Bates' principal.

Jenkins' play, called the "Adventures of Can and Do in Astroland," is a mix of academics and activity.

"The play has something to do with reading and the establishment of reading, and it helps us with reading," said Kaelah Somerville, a Bates student.

"It enhances our reading. They help us on the skills we need, and they help us when we have trouble with things like math, reading and language arts. So, they help us so we can learn," said Isaiah Harbor, a Bates student.

"It takes people from the community to help raise our children," said Jenkins' daughter, Raini. "You can't wait for somebody else. You have to take your time to see what you can do and this is what we could offer."

"It proves that students, if you give them something that will capture their attention, they will learn," Anne Jenkins said.

This year's Maryland School Assessment math and reading scores at Bates were up across the board for all students.
