Bible fun planned at Paulding churches this summer
West Ridge Church does things differently, including vacation Bible school.
This year’s school will meet in East Paulding High School and on the playing fields of East Paulding Middle School from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday through June 24.
The nondenominational megachurch started its program, called Surge, in 2008, explained children’s pastor Brent Moxey.
“We said, ‘Let’s come up with something kids like to do and let the kids be the evangelists, inviting their friends.’”
So they organized a sports and arts camp in which 930 kids choose one sport or art from more than 20 choices, including lacrosse, baseball, football, crafts, photography, Boy Scouts and cheerleading.
“We’re going to bring in instructors to train you in that all week,” Moxey said.
The evening camp’s 400 volunteers include martial arts and woodworking professionals and dance teachers from CK Danceworks, said Surge coordinator Tara Vanaman.
“The kids have about two hours of instruction time in their sport or art, and an hour in between to cool off and meet as a large group,” she said.
“In large group, we have a live band to sing praise and worship songs, and the kids can dance and sing,” Moxey said. “We’ll record a lot of our own videos and do funny, messy skits. We’ll preach the Word, talk about the Bible, for 15 minutes. We’ll lace everything they do with talk about the Bible and who Jesus is.”
Only about half the children attend West Ridge, he said.
“So for a lot of kids and parents, this is their first glimpse of what we do for kids: We have a live band and funny skits every week. We always try to make teaching the Bible as creative as we can.”
Campers’ families are invited to the camp’s Friday night finale at the church, which will include performances by martial artists and dancers.

“We have to do night vacation Bible school because the majority of our members work, and they all want to be involved in it,” said director Crystal Levstek.
“We used resources from Lifeway Christian Bookstores: ‘The Big Apple Adventure.’ It’s based on New York City. We’ll have a worship rally at Times Square; Bible study at Battery Park; music backstage; and crafts at The District.
