Review: Altec's Orbit Stereo USB PC speakers

Altec Lansing already offered a single housing monaural speaker in its Orbit line of portable speakers. But now it's doubled up with the latest model, the Orbit Stereo--a pair of USB-powered speakers that snap together into one long tube when not in use, so you can tuck them into a suitcase or laptop bag.

While the IML247 Orbit Stereo speakers aren't tiny, they are fairly lightweight, weighing 12.8 ounces, and you don't have to carry around any sort of extra power adapter. They also cost an affordable $49.99, which is $15 to $30 more than what you'd pay for the mono Orbit USB speakers.

If you're looking for something truly compact that sounds OK and puts out more sound than your typical laptop speakers, those single-speaker USB Orbits may be your better bet. But if you want a bit more punch to your presentations (or travel entertainment) and true stereo for watching movies or music in your hotel room (or wherever), the Orbit Stereo is the way to go.

I’ve had these for nearly 5 years now, and loved every minute of it. Despite only being 50W total, you wouldn’t believe how loud they go… and they produce excellent sound, no distortion usually.

However, i finally blew the damn things and I’m looking online for new 5.1 speakers, but they all really suck. Only 6 5.1 speakers to choose from on most websites… but over 40 2.1 systems! WTF?!

So I’m now looking for a replacement set of these online. @campercasado, where did you find yours?

ok i have a set of speakers similar to these one night i left them on playing no sound and the next morning the volume only goes up a bit, and yes i know i have tried turning up the volume on drive i have tried changing master volume and a bunch of other stuff but please help me i really dont want to have the money i spent on these things go to waste.P.S the had worked previously on this same computer but they dont now im thinking it might be a fried sound card but not sure PLEASE HELP ME!
