Committee praises rescuers involved in Xmas Island tragedy
STEPHEN LONG: The response to the sinking of a boat carrying asylum seekers off Christmas Island has been praised by a parliamentary committee.
It said rescuers were courageous and authorities did as much as they could in the very difficult circumstances.
Fifty people were killed in the tragedy last year.
The committee's recommended that a permanent memorial be built on the island.

DAVID WEBER: The committee has focused on the bravery and selflessness of those involved in the rescue effort.
The committee as a whole has made only three recommendations, mainly concerned with ongoing support for survivors and rescuers.
The Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor:
BRENDAN O'CONNOR: When this tragedy occurred, Customs, an agency that reports to me, had its own internal review and outlined a number of recommendations. Seven of the eight recommendations have been met and there's one still being trialled. The other thing that's really important about this report I think is that the unanimous view was that there was no fault by agencies in responding in the manner they did to this maritime tragedy.
DAVID WEBER: Mr O'Connor says the report underlines the dangers of embarking on such ventures, where people smugglers are willing to profit from those who are desperate.
BRENDAN O'CONNOR: And it also confirms why the Government must ensure we find a way to undermine the business model that's been sold to lure people on these vessels and to endanger their lives as we've seen so dramatically, so tragically with this awful incident that occurred on the 15th of December.
DAVID WEBER: The Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, who was on the committee, has provided several recommendations of her own.
She says the Greens want an independent review into Australia's border protection surveillance.
Senator Hanson-Young has also called for funding for an emergency services volunteer coordinator, on Christmas Island.
SARAH HANSON-YOUNG: Well I think the committee, the majority report and the three recommendations that are outlined there, while they are important recommendations, I think it's very disappointing that an inquiry into the tragedy on the coast of Christmas Island, which saw the loss of 50 lives has only come up with three recommendations. I am extremely disappointed that the committee wasn't able to do more thorough work.
