Dept. of Revenue takes over state business licensing

Washington State’s Business Licensing Service shifts to the Department of Revenue effective July 1. The shift was part of legislation Gov. Chris Gregoire signed in May. The service was previously done by the Department of Licensing.

Information about the service, renamed Business Licensing Service (BLS), is now available at http://business.wa.gov/BLS or by calling 1-800-451-7985.

All previous online content has been redirected to the new site. Previous phone numbers will continue to work. Those seeking in-person assistance may now visit: 6500 Linderson Way SW, Suite 102, Tumwater, WA 98501. The office is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, except state holidays or temporary layoff days.

The Department of Licensing continues to issue, renew, and regulate “professional” licenses.

State revokes Pasco day care's license

PASCO — Days after finding a Pasco day care center in violation of state laws after a toddler was left alone outside on a playground, the state Department of Early Learning has decided to revoke JigsawKids Preschool's license.

Scott Murray Thomason and Claudia Thomason, co-owners of the business, were notified late Thursday that their initial license is being revoked and their application for a full license is being denied.

Scott Thomason told the Herald on Friday that the couple are consulting a lawyer and plan to appeal the decision.

Business tax training seminar set Thursday

YAKIMA -- A business tax training seminar will be offered from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Small Business Incubator, 22 S. Third Ave. in Yakima.

The seminar is for new or emerging small businesses or businesses that need a refresher on federal and state reporting requirements.

Washington State's Business Licensing Service has shifted over to the Department of Revenue.

In May, Gov. Chris Gregoire signed legislation to move the state's Master License Service from the Department of Licensing to the Department of Revenue. The change officially took place on Friday, July 1.

Information about the service, renamed Business Licensing Service, is now available at business.wa.gov/BLS or by calling the toll-free number, 1-800-451-7985.

Tax amnesty program has some takers

More than 5,000 businesses in Washington have taken advantage of a new tax amnesty program and paid more than $12.6 million into the state Treasury, state officials report.

In addition, the business owners have saved themselves $4.3 million in penalties and interest by taking advantage of the amnesty program, which ends April 18.

The Legislature authorized the limited-time offer at Gov. Chris Gregoire's request.

Free tax workshop in Bellingham for new businesses July 12

The Bellingham office of the Washington Department of Revenue is hosting a free workshop for new and small-business owners from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12.

The workshop is at the Washington State Patrol/Washington State Dept. of Transportation Conference Room, located at 3920 Airport Way (at turnoff to airport), in Bellingham.

Participants will learn about Washington excise taxes, reporting classifications, deductions, tax incentives, sales tax collection, and record-keeping requirements. All receive a workbook and a reference guide to Department of Revenue rules and regulations.

Discover Pass kicks in for access to state recreational lands on July 1

Starting Friday, July 1, the Discover Pass is required for vehicle- and water-access to all state recreation lands managed by Washington State Parks, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the state Department of Natural Resources.

Think of the pass as a parking permit.

Employees from all three agencies will spend the Fourth of July weekend reminding people they need the pass for their vehicles, according to Virginia Painter, spokeswoman for the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission.
